Linked In is a site mainly used for professionals to network. Content is slightly more ‘serious’ than elsewhere for those developing social media relations. It claims about 433 million users with one joining every second. Here are some hints on starting out:

Do be patient as you learn how it will work for you – LinkedIn has many basic uses:

  • Networking – developing relationshipsAAEAAQAAAAAAAAJlAAAAJGJjY2RmNDRhLTI2ZWEtNGYxYy05OWVjLTNmMDc4Mjk5ZDhhMg
  • Following colleagues
  • Following topics (Groups),
  • Problem-solving (Answers),
  • Changing jobs,
  • Checking-out people before you call them,
  • Research.

Being a ‘watcher’ is good; so is being a participant –  don’t feel you have to join discussions. There are so many ‘conversations’ in LinkedIn you can simply watch others. Keep roaming until you find the Groups or other threads that interest you.

Don’t overuse Linked In – It’s not like Facebook or Twitter. So don’t post on it all day, every day. We think once or twice a week (make it relevant to the people you want at ‘connections’). And think about the audience you are communicating with.

Don’t discuss personal things – Again, not like Facebook. Business professionals in your network don’t want to see it.

Don’t promote – The fact that you are posting is self-promotion enough. Many groups ban promotions. If you are going to promote a business be subtle and indirect.

Don’t hold your breath for a response – many people are on Linked In to watch and learn – not to be heard.

Be careful of holiday information – be wary of posting info about your holiday. Thieves are on Linked In too.
